Bio
Nationally renowned drummer, percussionist, clinician and educator, Lance Philip, born in San Jose CA, USA in 1968 to musical parents immigrated to New Zealand in 1970 where he has been a permanent resident of New Zealand for 42 yrs.
Formative Years
During Lance’s formative years, Lance became involved in Wellington brass bands, National youth orchestras, and community musical theatres as well as school Jazz and Rock bands.
After graduating from high school, Lance’s drum teacher at the time, Bud Jones (percussionist with the NZSO and one of New Zealand’s most reputed drum teachers) encouraged Lance to audition for the Wellington Polytechnic Conservatorium of music (at the time, the only tertiary institution in New Zealand to offer a Jazz qualification).
Roger Fox Collaborations
After successfully passing the audition to the music school at age 17, Lance soon came to the attention of Band leader and New Zealand’s finest Jazz Icon, Rodger Fox where he toured the North Island of New Zealand with the band and concluded with performances at the Tauranga Jazz Festival.
This association with Rodger Fox opened the door for Lance to a number of projects that have included international artists such as: Patti Austin, Kurt Elling, Alan Broadbent, Arturo Sandoval, Gary Grant, Bill Reickenbach, Steve Houghton, Bill Cunliff, Clay Jenkins, Charlie Davis, Holly Hoffman, John Fedchock, Allen Vizzutti, Dick Oats, Joshua Redman, Bob Shepherd, Bruce Forman, Bob Mintzer , Jeff Driscoll and Eric Marienthall.
